Does any of this sound familiar?
Not enough respite workers? No one is showing up on time for you or your child?
Too much turn over of community and respite workers?
Want to have a choice in choosing your staff?
Want more choice of appropriate programs?
What is Self-Determination?
It is a program funded by OMRDD (Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilites). If you are enrolled in (or eligible) for Medicaid Home and Community Based Waiver, then you may tap into this innovative program in NY State.
It is an idea that came from people with developmental disabilities and their families. They wanted more control over their supports and services.
It's about personal choice, you, together with friends and family decide what you want to do, what supports you'll need and who to hire to assist you. You arrange your own service schedules. You authorize payments for supports and services you have chosen. You have to agree to budget wisely, but you are in control.
See the F.A.Q. section by clicking on the link above for more answers to questions you may have.
A support broker is a key part of the process. Advocate For Autism offers this service.
